The Caribbean is a region that consists of the Caribbean
Sea, its islands (some surrounded by the Caribbean Sea
and some bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North
Atlantic Ocean), and the surrounding coasts. The region
is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American
mainland, east of Central America, and north of South
Hispaniola is the 22nd-largest island in the world,
located in the Caribbean island group, the Greater Antilles. It is the second
largest island in the Caribbean after Cuba, and the tenth most populous island'
in the world.
Two sovereign nations share the 76,192-square-kilometre (29,418 sq mi) island.
The Dominican Republic, at 48,445 km2 (18,705 sq mi), is nearly twice as large
as its neighbor,
Haiti, which comprises 27,750 km2 (10,710 sq mi).
Kingstown is the capital, chief port, and main commercial centre
of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Kingston is the capital and largest city of Jamaica,
located on the southeastern coast of the island.
